gton 4109-4 Prospector Rod w / tube 4pc 4wt 10'9 ″ Fly fishing as a type of fishing appeared in England in the 15th century. It is a casting of bait into the water using a rod and a line, which changes its weight, and is accompanied by the constant movement of the fisherman along the shore in pursuit of his prey. The bait - live or artificial - is on the surface of the water or at a minimum depth. Therefore, this method of fishing is suitable for catching species looking for food in the upper layer of the reservoir (for example, pike, perch, whitefish, char).

Like other tackle, a fly rod has its own characteristics and parameters that you need to know about those who have chosen fishing as a hobby.

The main details of the fly rod:

  • Form. Usually has two or three knees (sections).
  • Grip and reel seat (located at the end of the grip to help reduce stress on the angler's hand).
  • Lead rings. Their number can vary from 5 to 11 pieces with a small diameter. Rings are produced single-support (half-snakes; make the rod lighter, help to reduce line speed and smoother front sight feed) or with two supports (snakes; improve throw range).

The rod can be one-handed (2-3.6 m) and two-handed (3.6-4.5 m). The first type is designed for catching small fish, the second - for catching large fish in difficult conditions.

Functions:

  1. Casting. Good quality gear, combined with a well-tuned technique, allows the line to be laid on the surface of the water so as not to scare prey.
  2. Cord control.
  3. Fishing for fish.

Rod characteristics

By material

  1. Made of fiberglass. It is gradually falling out of use. This is due to its heaviness, unnecessary vibrations during casting and not very high quality. Such rods are not expensive, and there are firms that still produce them for fishing a short distance from the coast.
  2. Carbon fiber. The most common rod material today. Its main advantage is lightness, because when fly fishing, the main physical load falls on the hands. Such tackles are more expensive than their fiberglass counterparts, and this is the case when the quality justifies the price: the higher it is, the better the rod corrects errors made during casting.
  3. Made of glued bamboo. These rods are handmade and therefore the most expensive in this segment. They require special care: ingress of moisture makes them vulnerable.
  4. Made of wood. Today this natural material is no longer used for the production of rods; you can buy them only from collectors. Such fishing equipment has great power and considerable weight.

By class

In total, their number is -21: the division goes depending on the weight of the cord, which can change at the time of the throw. Only the first nine meters of the cord counts. The lightest class is 000, the heaviest is 18.The higher the class, the more weight the bait can be used and expect to catch heavier fish. If you intend to catch small fish in good weather, rods of 0-3 classes are suitable. For catching medium-sized individuals in lakes or on the stream, it is better to use gear belonging to 4-6 classes. A predatory fish should be caught with equipment of 7-9 classes. Rods of class 10 and above are designed for sea "hunting" for large fish.

By weight

This parameter is directly related to the class of the rod: the lower it is, the easier the tackle will be.

In line

The indicator is of fundamental importance: it indicates the ability of the rod to communicate a certain amount of energy to the line. The faster the line, the more speed the line can develop when casting.

  1. Fast (hard). Only the tip is bent. This equipment is suitable for long distance casting. High line speed is guaranteed, but it requires an experienced hand. Ideal for heavy lures.
  2. Medium-fast (upper parabolic). The upper third of the equipment is bent. It is possible to use it at medium and long distances with the use of weighted baits.
  3. Medium (parabolic). The most versatile action popular with anglers. The bend of the equipment resembles a parabola.
  4. Slow (soft). Such equipment bends almost completely along its entire length.

The figure shows a table of rod curvature options. Its transcript shows how a part of the rod bends at each specific action.

By lenght

In the classic version, this figure varies from 2.4 to 2.7 m. You can find shorter or longer tackles on sale. For example, a rod shorter than 2.4 m is used when fishing from a boat.

By connection type

There are three of them:

  1. with a carbon fiber pin glued into the lower knee;
  2. the upper knee enters the lower;
  3. the bottom knee is placed in the top.

By the shape of the handle

  1. full profile (there are extensions at both ends);
  2. semi-profile (have an extension at only one end);
  3. cigar-shaped.

Top manufacturers

The list of companies producing popular fly rod models is quite extensive. Let's name a few well-established manufacturers.

  • ORVIS. The company was founded in the USA in 1856.
  • Amundson. The products of the Canadian brand are widely known in North America. Before they go on sale, new items are tested by renowned fishermen.
  • Vision. Fishing goods manufacturer from Finland. High quality of products is the priority of this company.
  • Sage. The American company dates back to 1980. It produces high-tech fly fishing rods, investing considerable funds in research and development.
  • Kola-Salmon. A domestic manufacturer specializing in the development of fly fishing rods and special equipment for this particular type of fishing.

How to choose a fly rod

  1. The first step is to decide what kind of fish you will "hunt". The choice of a suitable line directly depends on this: the light ones are suitable for medium-sized fish and small-weight baits, the heavier ones - for large individuals. The power of the equipment is determined by its class: the higher it is, the more it is and will allow you to cope with large prey.
  2. An important selection criterion is the action of the rod. Slow action equipment does not require perfect mastery of casting technique, but, on the contrary, allows you to hone it and train. It is suitable for fishing in a calm place, free from gusty winds and strong currents. A fast action rod will be indispensable in difficult fishing conditions, allowing you to make long-distance casting.
  3. Then you should choose the correct length of the rod, focusing on the size and type of reservoir you like for fishing. Short equipment is useful for fishing in a small river, longer - in lakes, wide rivers, at sea.
  4. The rod markings indicate the class, action and length, in some cases - weight, type of guides, number and location of knees. The system of measurements is used for marking in inches and feet.
  5. The rod handle should be made of cork or a combination of cork and rubber to keep it from slipping out of wet hands.
  6. You need to carefully examine the model you like, check how well the knees dock.
  7. For a beginner just getting started with fly fishing, a medium to slow action rod is better suited. More experienced anglers usually have several types of this equipment.
  8. Which rod is better to buy is an equally important question. There are a lot of proposals on the fishing equipment market today, both budget and luxury models. When choosing equipment for the price, you should not save too much: it is better to give preference to brands from trusted manufacturers specializing in the design and manufacture of fly fishing equipment. Well-known companies offer to get acquainted with special tables, in which they describe the main parameters of the models and give recommendations on the choice.
